The GoBroadband initiative led by Southern Cross University has been created to ensure local regional and rural industries are provided with best-practice advice, access to world class ICT research and high-tech demonstration facilities staffed by impartial and informed facilitators.

An outreach of these facilities is proposed through the formation of the GoBroadband Demonstration Centre (GBDC).

Its primary purpose is to provide:

  • Impartial advice on the use of ICT to enhance local regional industry;
  • Access to high-tech demonstration facilities, e.g.

Southern Cross University is developing plans for an e-Demo Centre at its Coffs Harbour campus to provide information and advice on the potential of the National Broadband Network.

Plans for the centre were discussed during a visit to the Coffs Harbour campus by Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, and the Labor candidate for Cowper, Paul Sekfy this month.

Senator Conroy and Mr Sekfy met with Southern Cross University's Professor of Information Technology and Information Systems, Professor Peter Croll, who led the submission for the early rollout of the National Broadband Network for the


'Implications of the NBN' - seminar series

In response to community and industry requests for more information regarding the implications of the NBN rollout for the Coffs Harbour Region, Professor Peter Croll, Regional Futures Institute, SCU will be holding information seminars in Coffs Harbour.

The seminars will include an information session for participants to understand how broadband technology can be used to manage and inform their lives, communities and industries. This will be followed by consultation to gauge demand for a more permanent e-Demo Centre to demonstrate existing and proposed technologies and the implications of the NBN rollout.

A submission to NBN Co that identifies the benefits for early adoption of the NBN to the Eastern Regional Corridor has been logged.

This Southern Cross University submission was handed to the Federal Member for Page, Janelle Saffin on 29 January, 2010. She will champion this to get the Australian Government’s $43-billion National Broadband Network (NBN) rolled out early to the NSW North Coast.


Southern Cross University is committed to the NBN with the construction of a state-of-the-art research and demonstration ‘broadband hub’.

 

This is part of a $10-million upgrade of facilities at its Coffs Harbour Education Campus.
