Welcome to the eEmergency Management forum of the Go_Broadband web site. The aim of this forum is to discuss local regional issues on eEmergency Management related to the National Broadband Network. Our aim is to address topics that relate to applications, systems and broadband usage.

With the declaration of eight Natural Disasters in 2009, including floods, severe storms and bushfires, spanning across the entire Eastern Regional Corridor, I’m sure everyone is in agreement that there is urgency in enhancing local and district Emergency Management systems. The introduction of the National Broadband Network can provide the very tool to improving communication and early warning systems across this vast region. Improvements that will enable greater agency coordination and communication, widespread early warning systems, and access to accurate and up-to-date information.

In large scale emergencies the response effort generally requires a multi-agency approach including our Police, SES, RFS, Fire Brigade, and Ambulance, along with a range of government and non-government agencies. With so many services involved it is essential that a coordinated approach between agencies is adopted. The fundamental basis of this coordination is communication. Multiple internet based tools are required to ensure accurate dissemination of information and provide reliable communication structures. Such tools include weather monitoring systems, telemetry, GIS, and inter-agency communications.

One aspect highlighted in the flooding events of last year was the importance of early warning systems. Early warning is considered paramount in helping communities gain accurate information to enable them to respond quickly and safely in impending emergencies. Throughout the Eastern Regional Corridor there resides a vast range of communities including urban, rural and remote. In order to provide early warning to the farthest reach, its paramount we introduce accurate, high speed broadband based technology that is reliable, has the capacity to maintain functionality in periods of excessive demand and is accessible to all.

Please note: The aim of this forum is NOT to discuss the cost of NBN services, or the type of technology that will be employed, or any other detailed technical issues about networks, or what you might think of Telstra, or provide any advertising services. There are forums for this already such as http://whirlpool.net.au/. Hence, this forum will initially be moderated and the rate of posting limited to minimize spam.

Perhaps we can start by considering how NBN can assist in monitoring impending natural emergencies and disseminating information. Any ideas……………………
