Welcome to eCreative Industies

Hosted by Mike Clarke - (contact)

Our region is a vibrant growth centre for arts and creative industries in Australia. Employment in the arts and creative industries is growing significantly faster than the rest of the regional economy and the Northern Rivers now has the highest concentration of visual artists outside the capital cities. With the largest cluster of screen industry workers outside Sydney and Melbourne, our region is recognised as the key ‘hot-spot’ for creative industries. We have internationally renowned creative communities such as Byron Bay, Lismore, Murwillumbah, Nimbin, Yamba and Bellingen. Private sector investment has also recognised this with their commitment to a multi-million dollar Creative Industries Village in Byron Bay.
The creative industry sector provides a host of opportunities to stimulate employment, economic growth, and healthy communities in the context of rapid population growth. One of the critical infrastructure components for this to be fully realised is the area of telecommunications.
Unlike any other sector, superfast broadband is critical for this industry’s future growth. The NBN will allow the immediate application of new modes of operation such as collaborative post production, rapid image file transfer, online real-time collaborative editing and a host of opportunities for new business models.

“I have a strand of my business involving data wrangling for location shoots which I am completely unable to develop due to the internet speeds in Australia. The process involves large scale file transfers of \"rush\" footage between users on different continents. I am lagging behind filmmakers elsewhere in accessing and exploiting this technology and I am having to consider permanently moving my entire production company overseas, from North Coast NSW to New York City. Dozens of people can be employed during a production and they will be deprived of this potential employment until the broadband access improves.
