NSW North Coast has a strong specialisation in the area of agriculture, forestry and fishing. This is influenced by the region’s coastal position and long established strong agricultural base.

The agriculture, forestry and fishing sector contributed an estimated $735 million to the regions Coast Gross Regional Product (2006). This is an established industry with strong sugar, beef and dairy, forestry, fruit and vegetables, commercial and wild caught fishing, and associated sectors with an estimated 14,000 persons employed in this sector in 2006.

The region is well placed to increase production and develop industry specialisation based on the availability of good quality agricultural land and water and a diversity of land and climate types suited to a variety of agricultural production purposes. With this sector highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the ability of the industry to adapt and mitigate the impacts is critical to the future of the region as well as Australia’s food security. Access to information and technology that support agricultural innovation are key as they will provide the tools for product diversification and production efficiency in the region.
